Black Bean Burgers

I always had a soft spot for black bean burgers. These savory alternatives often found their way to my plate at a barbecue, where I'd sneak a bite from my vegetarian friends. If I went out for a meal and the location had “hand made black bean burgers” on their menu, I just had to try it.

The epitome of a black bean burger is one that’s savory and meaty, with a patty that holds together, forming a uniform crust. It's a symphony of robust bean flavors harmonized with complimentary seasonings like our s.a.l.t. sisters Butcher Blend.

Now, there are a million online recipes one can choose from when wanting to elevate their meatless alternatives. However, they all follow a familiar routine: blend black beans with aromatics in a food processor, mix with eggs, breadcrumbs, and some whole or partially chopped beans, shape into patties, and cook. Despite the decent flavors these recipes promise, they all fall prey to a common flaw: a mushy texture. But not these. Our black bean burgers hold their weight in toppings – we love our toppings around here – while keeping shape inside your grilled hamburger buns. Give it a shot! I recommend some sliced gouda cheese, caramelized onions, dijonnaise, and some arugula. Bon Appétit and long live this scrumptious burger!

Servings: 4 patties

  • ½ cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 TBSP minced garlic
  • 1 TBSP s.a.l.t. sisters Butcher’s Blend
  • ¼ cup bread crumbs
  • 1 TBSP Bragg’s Coconut Aminos

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Heat olive oil in a large sauté pan over medium heat. Add black beans, red bell pepper, onion, and garlic. Sauté until beans are slightly dried out and vegetables soften.
  3. Transfer bean mixture to a food processor or stand mixer. Add s.a.l.t. sisters Butcher’s Blend, bread crumbs, Bragg’s Aminos, egg, mayonnaise, and feta cheese. Pulse or mix until ingredients are well combined.
  4. Divide mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into patties.
  5. Place patties on a parchment paper or foil-lined baking sheet. Bake for about 10 minutes on each side, until burgers are heated through and lightly browned.
  6. Serve on buns with your favorite toppings such as mayo, sliced tomato, pickle slices, and lettuce.
